Glamorgan Guide

The county of Glamorgan fell into several distinct regions: the industrial valleys, the agricultural Vale of Glamorgan, and the scenic Gower peninsula. The county was bounded to the north by Brecknockshire, east by Monmouthshire, south by the Bristol Channel, and west by Carmarthenshire and Carmarthen Bay.

Because of the beautiful country sides, hills of up to 2,000 feet, dramatic coastline with some of the best beaches in Britain, forests, waterfalls, castles, old churches, abbeys, and nature reserves, Glamorgan is known for it's walks and here are just a few of them:

• The name Glamorgan was introduced by the Normans, who took possession of the principality of Morgannwg in 1091.

• Glamorgan is the second largest in size after Carmarthenshire.

• It includes the cities of Cardiff and Swansea, the industrial valleys, and the Vale of Glamorgan.

• The county was officially created by Henry VIII in 1536 and survived as a political unit until 1974.

• The name appears on the present day political map of Wales courtesy of the Vale of Glamorgan council.

• Glamorgan was then divided into three council areas - Mid, South and West Glamorgan - which survived until 1996.
